Lock returned to Seattle in 2025 on a two-year deal and settled in as the backup behind Sam Darnold, the reigning Super Bowl LX-winning starter. A hip strain Darnold sustained early in the 2026 season opener against New England thrust Lock into relief duty, where an efficient, turnover-free outing has him projected to start at least the following week and possibly longer while Darnold recovers. Jalen Milroe, a developmental dual-threat prospect who has yet to attempt an NFL pass, remains the roster's real long-term succession plan at backup, capping the dynasty upside of this fill-in stretch even if it goes well.
