Lock returned to Seattle in 2025 on a two-year deal and settled in as the backup behind Sam Darnold, the reigning Super Bowl LX-winning starter. A hip strain Darnold sustained early in the 2026 season opener against New England thrust Lock into relief duty, where an efficient, turnover-free outing has him projected to start at least the following week and possibly longer while Darnold recovers. Jalen Milroe, a developmental dual-threat prospect who has yet to attempt an NFL pass, remains the roster's real long-term succession plan at backup, capping the dynasty upside of this fill-in stretch even if it goes well. Sell into whatever spot-start attention this window generates rather than buying, and otherwise treat him as a non-factor bench stash. Recommendation: sell/hold, with the sell window active only while Darnold is out over the next 2-4 weeks.
Seattle's long-term plan remains Sam Darnold, the reigning Super Bowl LX-winning starter, so once Darnold clears his hip strain Lock reverts to a clipboard role regardless of how the fill-in stretch goes.
Lock's two-year deal signed in April 2025 covers only this season, and Jalen Milroe, a developmental dual-threat prospect still without an NFL pass attempt, is the roster's actual long-term answer at backup once that contract runs out.
A hip strain Darnold sustained early in the 2026 season opener against New England has installed Lock as the starter for at least the following week and possibly longer, and an efficient, turnover-free relief outing gives him a real audition window in a contract year.
